Craig Secosan always enjoyed the challenges of math and science, and
especially chemistry. In 1977 after graduating Summa Cum Laude and Phi
Beta Kappa with a degree in Chemistry, Secosan entered medical school.
“It seemed only natural that I follow a career in medicine,” said
Secosan. “I liked to interact with people and medicine would give me
that opportunity.” After obtaining his MD, and completing his
internship, Dr. Secosan attended Barnes Hospital, Washington
University, St. Louis, MO. in order to complete his residency, in his
now chosen path of ophthalmology. “Ophthalmology gives me the
opportunity to take someone with declining vision and help them back
to having normal eyesight,” said Secosan. Citing an example of the
rewards of his profession Secosan recounts the story of a woman in her
50’s who had been declared blind some 20 years prior. At a suggestion
of a friend she consulted Dr. Secosan. After examining the woman and
performing surgery to remove advanced cataracts, she was able to see
again. “She saw her grandchildren for the first time,” recounts Dr.
Secosan.
In 1996, Dr.
Secosan was given the opportunity to join the team at
Highlands-Cashiers Hospital. “I was excited at the prospect of working
in such a modern facility,” he said. “The highly professional doctors,
nurses and staff, combined with their sense of community, are a
pleasure to work with. This still holds true today, he continues: “I
can do any general ophthalmological procedure at Highlands-Cashiers
Hospital that can be done at any large hospital in the United States.”
When not working,
Dr. Secosan likes spending time with his family. He also enjoys road
racing motorcycles, hiking and has recently begun hunting.
